I had shied away from this mod because of the steep price ($175-200). But now (as of 4/00) Mazda is offering this lid as a genuine Mazda accessory for a measly $108. ($78 on the net).
This thing was as easy as pie to install. And I'm no mechanic either. The instructions were clear, easy to follow, and all you need is an 8mm nut driver.
The lid is held in place with three screws from the existing setup. The old lid and the screws that hold it in place are removed and not used. The thing has a bunch of screws on the outside, but those are just for show. There is a rubber seal around the chrome ring with makes the whole thing fit snug and tight. This thing looks and feels like it came with the car.
It's a matter of taste whether you like the chrome look or not. But considering the 2001 Special Edition comes with it standard, they may be on to something! :)
